# Lesson Plan: Reading Fluency for Year 3 Students
## Subject: English Language
## Topic: Reading Fluency
## Grade Level: Year 3
## Duration: 60 minutes
### Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Understand what reading fluency is and why it is important.
2. Improve their reading fluency through guided reading practices.
3. Demonstrate ability to read a short passage with appropriate speed, accuracy, and expression.
### Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers.
- Chart paper with the poem "Jack and Jill" or a similar age-appropriate poem.
- Copies of a short passage for each student (one that is easy to read but engaging).
- Stopwatch for timing reading.
- Reading fluency rubrics for self-assessment.
- Pencils and erasers.
### Standards:
- Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.4
- Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
### Warm-Up (10 minutes):
1. **Introduction to Reading Fluency (5 minutes):**
- Briefly explain that reading fluency means reading smoothly, at a good pace, and with expression.
- Discuss why fluency is important: it helps understand the text better and makes reading enjoyable.
2. **Example and Non-Example (5 minutes):**
- Read a line from the poem "Jack and Jill" once in a robotic, choppy manner and once with smooth, expressive reading.
- Ask students which they preferred and why.
### Direct Instruction (10 minutes):
1. **Modeling Reading Fluency (5 minutes):**
- Read the poem "Jack and Jill" or another familiar short poem/passage with fluency.
- Highlight good reading practices: proper pacing, pausing at punctuation, using expression.
2. **Explaining Rubric for Self-Assessment (5 minutes):**
- Introduce the reading fluency rubric. Criteria include accuracy, speed, and expression.
- Explain how they will use it later to assess themselves or peers.
### Guided Practice (15 minutes):
1. **Choral Reading (5 minutes):**
- Have students read the poem together as a class, following your lead.
2. **Partner Reading (10 minutes):**
- Pair students and distribute the short passage.
- Students take turns reading to each other while their partner follows along and notes pauses, mistakes, and expression.
- After reading, partners give each other constructive feedback using the rubric.
### Independent Practice (15 minutes):
1. **Timings and Re-readings (10 minutes):**
- Students read the same passage individually, timed by you or an assistant.
- Record the time taken and any noticeable issues.
- Students then re-read the passage independently, aiming to improve their time and fluency.
2. **Individual Reflection (5 minutes):**
- Allow students a few minutes to reflect on their performance and set a personal goal for improvement using the rubric.
- Encourage them to write one thing they did well and one thing they want to work on.
### Cool Down and Review (10 minutes):
1. **Group Discussion (5 minutes):**
- Ask students to share what strategies helped them read more fluently.
- Discuss common challenges and how to overcome them.
2. **Class Reading (5 minutes):**
- Conclude by reading the poem or passage together one last time to see how much everyone has improved.
### Assessment:
- Formative: Observe students during choral and partner reading; note common errors and areas needing improvement.
- Summative: Evaluate students' self-assessment and goal-setting reflections.
- Provide individual reading assessments at a future date to track progress.
### Homework:
- Assign a new short passage for practice at home. Encourage students to read it to a family member and receive feedback.
### Differentiation:
- **For Struggling Readers:** Pair with more fluent readers for support. Provide additional practice materials with simpler texts.
- **For Advanced Readers:** Challenge them with slightly more complex texts that still allow them to practice fluency without frustration.
### Reflection for Future Teaching:
- Reflect on which strategies worked well and which didn’t.
- Gather student feedback on their perception of the activities.
- Adjust future lessons based on the assessment of their progress and challenges.
